For the last couple of years the National lakeshore has been buying out properties along old highway 12 and demolishing the houses in an effort to restore the wildness of the area.
Alot of these houses are old and still standing abandoned, while some are gone and nothing remains but scrub where the forest is beginning to reclaim the area.
I seen a bunch today and it dawned on me that if we can get permission these would be ideal for detecting.
There is so many and access is right there.
This might be a gold mine if we can hunt these lots.
Highway 12 is very old, and i believe the first main rd into this area around the lake.
The looks on some of the standing portions i have no doubt are 100 yrs or more.
Even if the house is newer, there could have been an older house there before
there is no telling what we could find given the area as it has had people over it for hundreds of years.
This is the area where the settelers would have had trails, camps, homesteads on too.
Al capone used highway 12 extensively back in the day and had a house near me and an original still standing brothel building 3 blocks from where i'm at right now.
I believe the National lakeshore owns the properties which is basically the state.
There are no numbers to call so to speak but i know where i can inquire about the properties and go from there about getting permission, if that is possible?
I will keep everyone who is interested updated when i found out something
Rob! I hope its ok, I know at the dunes on the trails your not allowed to even pick up a stick!!! Then on the trail coming back along the shore line, they don't want anyone to wander off the trail to prevent beach erosion, yeah right like the beach will sink into the lake if you walk near the water, chances are they want the wild to take over the homes and properties, chances are they will say no, but its worth a shot! do you know where to go? up 49 past the guard house, go up toward the beach, you will see a building on the right hand side, go in there and ask, that is also where you would get your permit to hunt the beach, you still have untl May to hunt!
These properties were bought up for the Indiana Dunes National Lake Shore, I'm pretty sure they will be protected, but it would not hurt to ask! I'm guessing they would send crews in to remove the bad stuff like tar shingles and asbestos and other man made items so the plant life and wild can reclaim the land!
I go by a park in Gary, every morning on my way to work on north side of 12&20 west. It doesn't seem to be used much anymore. I have wondered myself what might be hidding there. The problem is, it is in a bad part of town. As stated before, Strength and Safety in numbers.
