I have detected a sight in Porter County Indiana several times. Never any finds to write home about. Just the other day I went to check out the property and saw the barn was knocked down. I mentioned it to the property owner and he told me a story. You see, as he was bulldozing the building he saw a glint in the ground. He dismounted his dozer and found it was a 1895 20.00 gold coin. He was obviously excited but, being a hard working man, remounted his dozer and continued to work. After the building was pushed to a pile he burned the wood and watched as the fire burned to coals.
The next day this man started his dozer and began to drag the ground where the barn stood so he could make the ground flat and to a grade. While grading he sees glass. Concerned his children would be injured he dismounted and went to retrieve this danger. He walked to the glass and, you guessed it, it was a jar. What was in the jar you ask? A handful of silver quarters, halves, and dollars, all dating in the 1930's.
As you can imagine I was awestruck by this tale. I had my doubts but the gold coin and the jar, both still muddy, convinced me as did the slightly blackened silver.
I detected today, in another location and found a memorial penny. It was from the 1980's and was corroded bad enough that the edges were missing. While on the way home I stopped at a Case Tractor dealership. I asked what the trade in value of a used metal detector would be. I was interested in a new bulldozer.
