Just read this online in the Kankakee Daily Journal...Oct.12,09

The Momence City Council will hold an emergency meeting tonight to determine the fate of the 1853 National Hotel in downtown Momence, which partially collapsed Saturday.

The collapse left eight people homeless, closed two business locations and has closed traffic on Dixie Highway -- Illinois Route 1/17 -- in both directions ever since.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported. But the collapse might be the end for the historic building.

The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. at the Old City Hall buildling in Momence, 123 West River St..

Hi John, good to hear from you. Saturday around 9:00am part of the front collapsed, I was a block away when it took place. The building itself is on the corner with a sidewalk on two sides, the only grass area is on the north side of it. That was put in two years ago when they took down a old building, dug out the foundation, filled it in with clean fill from a site near Baker & Taylor and planted some grass. If you are in the Momemce area cross the kkk river turn south on Mill street and try Island park, it's one of my go to places.
