DUH-TEKTORS of NW Indiana

Historical Research and Recovery Team

As stories go, this one is unfinished. I frequent the Ozarks in Missouri and have made great friends that I will hold dear forever. A few of these friends own a couple of pieces of property that are soaked in history. Knowing that hunting for relics and old coins is a passion, these dear friends told me of a few interesting locations. The photos are of my initial, and recent, scouting trips to these sites. My finds on the first scouting trip....... well, I was as excited as any true fan of history could be. Bushwackers thrived in this part of Missouri and signs of their activities are still aplenty. I can't wait until I can return to explore these sites, as I am sure you can imagine. Oh, the funny tree pointed to the little cave. Imagine my excitement when my detector sung near the mouth of the cave. The initial dig uncovered an old shotgun shell, it was headstamped "US Defiance" From what I can tell it dates to the late 1800's. A few other finds followed but their description will have to wait until I make a return to the site and combine those finds with what may be found in a future expedition.
As for the other photos, one is of one of two log cabins nestled about the Missouri hills and the other is of the entry to a turn of the century Inn. Most of the cabin fell in on itself and most of my initial visit was spent cleaning out the interior of the cabin. I plan to return in the future and explore the interior thoroughly. Marbles, the doors lock, and a few nick knacks comprised the finds during debris removal. The Inn was kinda creepy, reminded me of the movie "The Shining". Alone, I had a difficult time concentrating on my machine as I was worried I would hear the words, "hello Danny, come and play with us, forever and ever and ever...." Yikes! Old, overgrown roads approached this inn through heavily forested hills and a beautiful river flows close by. My initial attempt at detecting was plagued by trash as the building had burned sometime in the distant past. I was unprepared for this site as I did not know the inn was there, I was told there was simply an old building out in the woods. A walk of several miles led me to the location and darkness and rain clouds prohibited a thorough search. In a future trip I will be properly equipped and better prepared. I will keep those who are interested posted.
