Trash Finds

Hi fellow members! I have been having some bad days swinging my 4 inch coil in my back yard. Since my wife is recovering from a dog bite on her hand from our Terrior I have been staying close to the house in case she needs me. My back yard must have been a junk yard that was coverd over with about 4 inches of top soil. I have been finding all kinds of stuff from old square nails to foil and rusted metal pieces. I cant move more than a couple feet in the all metal settin without getting a hit. I nulled out all metal and pop tabs leaving me pennies and silver only to search for. I get quite a few hits in this mode. When I dig I end up with Aluminum cans and foil. I also am getting some iron and steel pieces out of the hole mixed in with the foil and cans. There also many square nails in the mix. The nails steel and iron are discriminated out and do not give any audable siignal as it should be with my settings. The aluminum cans ring as a dime or on occaisions a quarter. This is frustrating the heck out of me. I have only found 2 clad pennies and a nickle and have dug 50 or more holes in the back yard. I guess I should just give up on my back yard and front yard also since it is very trashy to. I figured with all the old square nails I am finding there ought to be some old coins but nothing but clad. If anyone has any suggestions on a better way to sweep these yards let me know. Thanks and keep in touch.

Hey there Ron!!!! the only real thing you cando is tough it out!!!! you have to clean out the crap its masking any good signals you might have in your yard! Grid your yard off in 10ft x10ft squares then hunt the hell out of that square! of cours you will find a junk first! but if there is any old coinage there or any other good signal thats when it will show!!!! your problem with the aluminum cans coming up as a dime or quarter! I know exactly what your talking about my Garrett will do that same thing from time to time, mostly with freakin pulltabs, it will say quarter I'll dig a freakin pulltab, then the detector will get in that groove and it will be like crap!!!!!! So just be patient with your yard, if something is there and we all know you have the tools to find it and if your meant to find it then mybe if your lucky enough and if the wind is blowing from the............... oh you will find it!!!!!

Thanks for your help on clearing out the trash. After 4 pop cans that rang up as a dime I disc'd the dime out and the next detect I got showed it as a wheat penny and the VDI was right on also. My detector said it was 6 inches down so I dug and found it with my pin pointer. To my amazement I found it to be a 1954 Wheat. This is my first find in coins that was not clad. I am one happy camper with my Detector and my find. I know it is not much but it is a start.

Yep it sure is a start! my first old coin find was a wheat as well!!! CONGRATS!!!!!! now all clad you find from now on will be considered battery money!! and your next big find shall be either a merc or a silver rosie!! always remember to keep a possitive attitude and never go detecting with other things on your mind, become one with the detector!!!!!! may the force be with you Ron!!!! you have old silver freak written all over you! check Anderson for any old parks, go through the grassie areas off to the sides first, and go slow, no running!!!LOL and then along older pathways or walkways in the park, and steer clear of the shelters and pavillions thats where you will find an ass load of pulltabs and bollte caps. Also if there are any ponds, check around the shores up to a few feet from the water, people tend to sit on the grass around ponds! Also another thing about your yard, remember it could be a junk signal but it also could be a gold ring, they don't give off the best of signals! I dig just about everything! because you'll never know what might pop out of the ground, and my knees get so sore from it! so work your yard like there is no tomorrow! and remember to put the house and garage back when your done!!LOL
